Relationship between family typology and communication in the Emotional Self-Concept of adolescents aged 15 to 17

Abstract
Family members interact and relate to each other and society in general, and the type of communication within the family and the self-concept of its members are significant. This study explored the relationship between family typology and communication in the self-concept of 50 high school adolescents aged 15 to 17 from the city of Loja, Ecuador. The Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS) by Barnes and Olson and the Self-Concept Questionnaire Form 5 (AF-5) by García and Musitu were used for this purpose. The results revealed positive and significant correlations between the level of openness in communication and family self-concept, physical self-concept, and social self-concept in nuclear families. Additionally, a significant and inverse correlation was found between the magnitude of communication problems and family self-concept. In single-parent families, significant correlations were observed between the level of openness in communication and family self-concept, as well as academic-career self-concept. Likewise, a negative correlation was observed between the magnitude of communication problems and family self-concept. Extended families showed positive but nonsignificant correlations between open communication and self-concept. It is concluded that family type is related to communication, as open and frank communication is positively associated with healthy self-concept among adolescents. This underscores the importance of considering these factors in studying individuals belonging to this age group.
