Abstract

The study was carried out with a representative sample of Ecuadorian police officers, which confirms that police work is continually exposed to various stressors, which have been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of the research were to evaluate the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome (BS), examine the relationship between the different dimensions of SB and Job Satisfaction (SL) and propose a specific predictive model of SB for Ecuadorian police officers. The research design was correlational, using a sample of 3,735 police officers during the pandemic period, collecting data from April 2020 to November 2022. The surveys were applied: 1) Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS), 2) Job Satisfaction of Sonia Palma (SL-SPC) and 3) Socio-labor factors. The results indicate that 79.22% of the sample are men, 20.78% women, with 9.48% in managerial roles and 90.52% performing technical-operational functions. 2.62% present a high level of SB, while 70.04% show a propensity to experience symptoms of burnout and 30.10% experience job dissatisfaction. A weak negative relationship (-.038) is observed between the SB and the SL. In relation to sociodemographic variables, such as sex, marital status, age and parenthood, they do not seem to constitute significant risk factors for the development of SB in police officers. The proposed model manages to predict 64.1% of SB in Ecuadorian police officers, highlighting the importance of meeting job demands and providing adequate resources.
